29 Ἐπεὶ τί ποιήσουσιν οἱ βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν; εἰ ὅλως νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται, τί καὶ βαπτίζονται ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν;

29 Otherwise, what will those who are being baptized accomplish for the sake of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are (those people) being baptized because of them?

Ἐπεὶ – conj. marking cause/reason with the sense of “otherwise.”

τί – interrog. pronoun functioning substv. [W345-46].

ποιήσουσιν – main verb [fut-act-ind-3-p-ποιέω].

οἱ βαπτιζόμενοι – nom. subj. [pres-pass-ptc-masc-pl-nom-βαπτίζω]. Art-adj-substv-ptc [W619-21].

ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν; – prep. phrase. See BDAG 1.c. Expresses benefit, interest, cause, or reason. Functions adv. more so than adj.

εἰ – cond. conj. marking a first class condition [W690-94].

ὅλως – adv. of ὅλος marking the “highest degree on a scale of extent” (BDAG 1.).

νεκροὶ – nom. subj. of the cond. sub. clause. Monadic absence of the art. [W248-49].

οὐκ – neg. adv.

ἐγείρονται, – verb of cond. sub. clause [pres-pass-ind-3-p-εγείρω].

τί – interrog. pronoun functioning adverbially (“why?”) [W345-46].

καὶ – conj. that could mark the apodosis (“then”) or express emphasis (“indeed”).

βαπτίζονται – subj. and main verb [pres-pass-ind-3-pl-βαπτίζω].
