58 Days of Easter – 1 Corinthians 15:56

As a way to prepare for Easter, I invite you to join me on a 58 day journey through the 58 verses of 1 Corinthians 15 in Greek. At this point, there will no longer be any videos or PowerPoint PDFs, though I may finish those at some later time in the future.

1 Corinthians 15:56

56 τὸ δὲ κέντρον τοῦ θανάτου ἡ ἁμαρτία, ἡ δὲ δύναμις τῆς ἁμαρτίας ὁ νόμος·

56 Now the sting of death (is) sin, and the power of sin (is) the Law.

τὸ…κέντρον – nom. subj. of an elliptical sentence implying a copula (“to be”). The known quantity (i.e., “sting” from the last verse) is the subj. in convertible propositions [W40-46]. Word order is a factor here as well since both substantives are articular.

…δὲ… – transitional (soft) conj. [W674].

τοῦ θανάτου – subj. gen. “Death stings.” [W113-16].

ἡ ἁμαρτία, – pred. nom.

ἡ…δύναμις – nom. subj. of an elliptical sentence implying a copula (“to be”). The known quantity (i.e., “sin” from the last verse) is the subj. in convertible propositions [W40-46]. Word order is a factor here as well since both substantives are articular.

…δὲ… – connective conj. [W671].

τῆς ἁμαρτίας – subj. gen. “Sin forces/is strong/is capable/is able/is powerful.” [W113-16].

ὁ νόμος· – pred. nom.
